 BLACK  to My ROOTS

Black to My Roots
African American tales from the head- & the heart.
7:30 PM 6000 16th Ave SW, Little Theater (Science Building 125), South Seattle Community College

Black to My Roots expresses the collective experience of African American women and their unique relationship with their tresses. Hair and race, hair and men, hair and popular culture, hair and history...who knew that something so minute in nature, could in fact be a reflection of much more? Intelligent, funny and original, “Black to My Roots” tells tales of love and laughter, tales of pride and pain - and, ultimately, tales of acceptance.
Tickets, $5/ $3 students & seniors.  For more information contact,
Cessa Heard-Johnson, 206-768-6455.

The FCC @ the HUB Auditorium, Univ. of Washington

An FCC Hearing on Media  Consolidation with FCC Commissioners, expert testimony and public comments 9am, Friday March 7: HUB Auditorium, Univ. of Washington for more information:www.reclaimthemedia.org. Five powerful media giants control most of what's seen on TV/Cable. In most communities, just four companies control 70% of all radio broadcasting. The Internet, a wonderful tool, is no guarantee of diversity--as legal safeguards for open access are under constant  attack by the corporate communications lobby. TAKE ACTION: Come to the FCC's  hearing!

"Militarization and the Trafficking of Women"
Featuring the documentary: "Say I Do". This film chronicles the stories of three "mail-order brides" from the Philippines now living in Canada. In order to escape lives of poverty and support their families, these women married men they didn't know. The mail-order bride industry has exploded with the advent of the Internet. Websites, newspaper advertisements, and pen pal agencies sell contact information to link men from the West with women from developing countries. What lies ahead for these women is uncertain. The lucky ones may find stability. The less fortunate may suffer terrible consequences. All of them are willing to take the risk. 2002. 56 mins. For more info:

Presenters, Jennifer Brower - NAPAWF Seattle, Abigail Baquiz - Gabriela Network Seattle, Emma Catague (tentative) - API Women and Family Safety Center
