Seattle To Celebrate International Women's Day
On Sunday, March 9, 2003 a coalition of women's groups will celebrate International Women's Day with a variety of cultural presentations, educational forums and networking opportunities. The annual celebration will take place at the Seattle Center's Center House from 12 noon - 5:00 p.m. Free childcare will be provided.
This year's theme "Women Reclaim Democracy - We Will Be Heard!" takes on a particular significance in light of the possible war on Iraq and the domestic and international implications of the Bush administration's current war on terrorism. Workshops will focus on the impact of war on women in Iraq, Palestine, Israel, Philippines, Somalia and other countries. Other workshops will focus on the domestic impact of the war on U.S. women and children in terms of the destruction of the social safety net and the relationship with the increasing U.S. military budget. Video documentaries will be shown all day with discussion groups on race and representation, women's voices for peace and justice, women's media literary and videos made by young women. All these workshops will have action components to provide opportunities for women to organize and be heard to reflect the event's theme.
On the main floor of the Center House, audiences will be entertained by cultural performances from all over the world. Over 40 women's and peace groups have annually participated in the informational tabling providing educational materials and projects for women to participate in.
"Girls Got Game" Art/Essay contest has also been added this year to encourage young people to design original works that pay tribute to female athletes and the positive impact of women in sports. This is in light of the current Bush administration policies, which may set back the gains, made under Title IX of the Civil Rights Law.
