The Defender Association, 206.447.3900

This is the general telephone number for The Defender Association. TDA is a public defender agency representing indigent people, generally after they are charged with crimes.  In order to get to be a client of TDA or The Defender Association, one would need to contact OPD or the Office of Public Defense (206) 296-7662 and ask to be screened for income eligibility. If the individual meets the financial criteria, (s)he could be appointed to The Defender Association, or to another public defender agency. If the individual has previously talked to an attorney from TDA, (s)he would generally be assigned to TDA for representation on the case.  TDA does operate a 24-hour lawyer answering service for people in custody, but that lawyer is not able to come to the jail to visit people except for homicide arrests.  For mass protest arrests, in general, we recommend that people call the Hotline (below).
